Weekly Photo Challenge: Big

This week’s photo challenge theme as Sara Rosso explains, is…BIG. It’s larger than life, it’s unexpected, it’s the protagonist in a scene. It’s big. It often helps to have some normal object as part of the scene so people can understand the scale, as I did in this picture of a GIANT mortadella in the grocery store. It must have been 10 feet long.

Sara challenged me to share a picture which means BIG to me! The following picture captures the theme perfectly.

My brothers, a friend and I hiked into the Grand Teton National Park during vacation one year. That’s my little brother there in the picture. We had been hiking since dawn and by mid-afternoon, we were just entering the most scenic part of the Park when my little brother suddenly turned around and announced, “It’s big!”  And, it certainly was. The mountains reached into the sky and touched the clouds while the wind played in the trees. Taking a deep breath, I followed the others as we continued in silence, marveling at the towering mountains surrounding us. We heard the cry of hawks and the rustling of deer and other wildlife as we walked the dirt path, drawing us closer and closer to the interior of the Park. It was just before dark when we finally settled down for the night. I’ve been to a lot of Big Places, but this was probably my biggest. I will never forget falling asleep under the stars with the mountains hugging me from all sides.

  3. I think this picture meets the photo challenge! Now for another challenge…how about some short stories on those camping experiences? You really had a great way with the words in the description of this picture.

    • I’m glad you liked it. It means a lot to hear your comments. Thank you!

Hmm. You’re setting my mind to wander. As I think over the experiences during my short and long hikes, I recall with a smile each and every interesting moment. I think I will accept your challenge. (I tap my temple in pensive thought.) But, which one to write first?

  4. What is interesting is that the project itself–a weekly photo challenge–seems to be connected with the idea of the art of photography as sport, which is also portrayed in the physicality of the subject in the photo above. Concepts such as conquest, scheduling, effort, and challenge are definitely embedded in some attitudes toward art.
